With Pastor John J. Cox and Karah Antoine
About four months ago God started speaking to me about the need for our church to spend more time in prayer. I began praying and seeking God’s direction about what it should look like. God’s response was simple, preach and teach on prayer and find ways to encourage the members and friends of VABC to pray more. I am inviting you to join me on this journey of prayer.
Below is an explanation of how we’ll begin this journey together. My prayer is that you will find every reason to get connected to this because I believe the prayers of God’s people have tremendous power.
As each one of us presses into God’s presence we will be able to experience an increase in God’s power and spirit among us. Being transparent, I was terrified at the thought of doing this because I know that when you begin to pray and follow God’s promptings the enemy will get busy trying to stop you at all cost. And sadly, I have seen that happen, but I reached out to my Pastor to ask his advice, and he shared these simple powerful words “Go with God” This year I am inviting you to do just that, in 2021 let’s go with God.
Go With God,
Rev. John J. Cox

Praying the scripture is a way of reading the Bible and turning the actual words of scripture into prayers. The book of Psalms is a good place to begin practicing.
Praying the hours is an easy way to add more prayer into your day in an intentional way. This could mean deciding to pray each hour (1:00, 2:00, 3:00, 4:00, etc.) or each odd hour (1:00, 3:00, 5:00, etc.) or any variation that works for you. It will keep you mindful of prayer throughout the day and give you more time with God.
This is another simple way to add more prayer into your day. If you pray in the mornings, maybe consider praying in the evening as well. Or, if you pray in the morning and in the evening, you may want to add a prayer time at midday.
An intercessor is a person who prays for other people. There are two ways to approach this. One way is to pray for people in your private time of prayer. Another way is to pray with someone at a mutually agreed time to intercede in prayer agreement. Both are helpful ways to keep you thinking of others.
Fasting is a way to add emphasis to prayer. Jesus comments that some things only come by praying and fasting. Fasting is when you make an intentional sacrifice to show God you mean business. There are a lot of different ways to approach it and we will have a few opportunities throughout the year to fast together.
A prayer partner is a spiritual accountability partner. A prayer partner is a person you build a relationship with to share concerns where you need prayer. You will also have the opportunity to pray with them. A prayer partner can help identify the moments when you can improve, they can help remind you of your goals, and pinpoint how God can help you reach them. If you add a prayer partner to your life you will be thankful you did.
A prayer walk is a great way to put your faith and prayer in action. It involves walking and praying (with your eyes open) as you believe God for something. We have had prayer walks in the past, and are looking forward to having more in the coming days. This is a good way to get prayer out into the community.
